DESCRIPTION:This one-hour presentation thoroughly explores the bio-psycho-social aspects of tobacco use disorder specific to individuals with mental and substance use disorders. Data are reviewed to explain a high prevalence of the use of combustible tobacco and vaping products\, the physical and mental health consequences\, and common misconceptions that sustain smoking in the treatment setting and recovery community. A description of a systems approach for integrating tobacco interventions into existing services is provided. \n\nDefine the origin of prevailing tobacco-related social norms in the treatment & recovery culture.\nCite data to demonstrate that Pennsylvanians with mental & substance use disorders have disproportional tobacco-related health disparities & inadequate access to appropriate tobacco treatment services.\nIdentify strategies to denormalize tobacco use in behavioral health settings & support evidence-based tobacco use disorder interventions within a recovery-oriented framework.
